I have been looking for work for over 18 months. Times are hard all around and I am fotunate to have friends to help keep me upbeat. Their are jobs out there but most of the jobs you get are because of someone you know, your network, and not what you know. Everyone keep your eyes on the goal and if you know of a fit for someone, help them out with a phone call or referral.

The previous comment of "it's not WHAT you know, but WHO you know" has been true in most of the jobs I've attained. Nevertheless, it might help in the job search if we know the needs and qualifications of those who are searching for work. Even though this is an internet site and even though many of us have never met face-to-face, many of us HAVE met other members, and each one of us has a separate circle of friends and acquaintances that become potential contacts for our other friends/acquaintances. If we know the qualifications and requirements of those folks seeking employment or living situations or whatever, we are better able to help out. One job I found was through the recommendation of an e-mail friend in CA whom I had never met. She referred me to a web-site of which I'd never heard, and through applying for a job on that site, I found work in my chosen area. I would not have known about that option if I hadn't asked for help from online friends, so this thread is a great idea . . . and this past October, 6 years after applying for that job, I was finally able to meet that e-mail friend in person. Oh . . . and, also . . . when I lived in CO, I was looking for work and wrote to all the CO women on the ES site between the ages of 30-60, and I told them I was looking for work and a living situation. In that case, the job and living situation came through another new contact, but I did meet many new friends from ES, a couple who I count as very close friends . . . and one of those women is the one who introduced me to Mark . . . so . . . we can be happily surprised when we ask for help . . . and open the door to new people and options.

Been out of work Since December 10th 2008. Not many jobs around here and at 61 I keep getting the thanks but no thanks replys. I retired from the Kansas Dept of Corrections as a Corrections supervisor. I also have many years in sales and sales management. It seems like the only jobs I have been able to find in Wa state since I moved here are companies that open a new store without enought money to run a new store and they go broke in 3 to 4 yrs. None of this is because of me , I incresased sales for them in both jobs. Steve

Now you see why I live in California ...I'd rather be in Texas but the work and money has always been here for me. I'm a hospital RN ...if anyone wants information along the medical lines I can help ...I've worked all over southern California for the last 35 years so I know the area well. I'll keep my ears open and pass on anything I hear about. Rue

Washy, this is kinda tongue-in-cheek, but kinda not . . . You could market yourself . . . make flyers to send to small business owners highlighting your track record for increasing business and promoting good customer relations as well as keeping the criminals at bay . . . They'd be getting a "two for one" deal.
