Does Anyone Have a horse w/Permanent Traec
Posted: Jun 9, 2012 at 7:37 PM
I am planning on taking my mare to A & M to get a permanent Tracheostomy and wanting alittle feed back to listen about the pros and cons. Did research before planning and just wanted to talk about it. She has paralisys of the voice box basically. Came on gradually then went fast into panic when she couldn't breathe at all. She has a temp trach. but the paralisys is still there and therefore she won't be able to breath without the surgery at this writing. The surgery itself isn't as scary as the possible maintenance and care. Does anyone online here have the knowledge?

The January issue of Equus magazine has an article about a mare with Arytenoid Chondropathy and she has a permanent tracheotomy. Hope this helps.

I would think that Texas A&M would have records on file of others that have had the surgery perhaps your own vet might know of some. Or contact other vet schools. Usually they want to help with support from others that have undergone a like procedure.

with people it's a sterile technique. i would imagine it has to be cleaned daily. i can ask my vet friends at the equine clinic. your procedure may be done by the time i get an answer though. however, if you have questions later i may be able to get them answered. good luck

At this writing we didn't have to do the permanent traec. Her paraylsis went away. They don't know why and are observing her for a few days before I bring her home. A mystery that we don't have an answer for. Dr is scratching her chin but stormy and I are blessed and hope that it doesn't happen again.

Update: The paralysis is from either EPM or nerve damage. Still do not need to perm traec. God is watching over us, hope in leads her back home to me. I have her back at A & M waiting on test results. Wed - Fri should have several back.
